The Big One: A Fishing Tale by WILL

The Big One: A Fishing Tale by WILL

We fished for two and a half days before we finally caught a good one.

Today, I caught a huge striped bass off the back of our houseboat in Lake Powell.

This is how it started: I woke up to the rain hitting the roof and my window. It was about 6:30 am. I went upstairs and it was pouring. But Doyle was awake and we decided to try our luck fishing.

Morning and night, we cast our lines.

It was a great time to fish because it is when the big fish come out. I cast my line and waited. I helped Doyle put his hook on. Just as he was getting his bait, my rod doubled over.

I had a fish on my line! I cranked and cranked and on the end of my line in the water, I could see a huge fish-shaped lump of whitish green. I yelled to Doyle to get the net. He ran and screamed, "Will caught a huge catfish!"

Well, it wasn't a catfish, but it was huge. As it flopped around I saw it was a striped bass, the largest and rarest fish in Lake Powell.

My mom's mouth was watering. She asked if we could eat it. I replied as I had many times before, NO! We put it into our large cooler, but it was still 2-3 inches bigger diagonally. It was at least a foot and a half long and thirty pounds. I released it into the lake and it swam off.

Later, I caught a catfish. Here are some more fishing photos:
